Potty Training Girls
 |
Usually, parents who have “been
there” will tell you that potty
training girls is easier than
accomplishing the feat with boys.
Helping your little girl make the
transition from diapers to using the toilet will still take patience on
your part as well as on hers. |
Be sure when you train your little girl to use the bathroom that you
train her to wipe from the front to the back, when she is done. If she
wipes in any other way, you risk spreading bacteria. This can cause
vaginal or urinary tract infections. If your girl doesn’t understand
the motion of front to back, you can help her learn to pat herself
until she is dry. This is most important after she has a bowel
movement, since that is the time when more bacteria will be present.
Your daughter is like a mini-“you”, and she will naturally want to do
things the way you do. This can work to your advantage when it’s time
for potty training. Just as she likes to wear heels and try to put
makeup on like you, she will also benefit from watching Mom use the
bathroom, when it comes time for training. Seeing you using the “big
girl toilet” will help encourage her when it comes time that she uses
the toilet as well.
It will be easier to train your daughter to use the potty if the toilet
is inviting. There are potty chairs available that stand by themselves,
or they can come as an attachment that fits on your toilet. You can
even find potty chairs that are decorated like thrones, which will make
them more enticing. Place her potty chair somewhere she can be
comfortable when she uses it.
Allow her to practice on it with her clothes on, before you get into
real training. Once she “gets it”, then you can explain how to use it,
and help her to sit on her potty chair with her pants down. She will
learn to understand that her potty chair is there for times when she
feels like she needs to go to the bathroom.
Young girls usually love being able to do what big girls do, and
wearing real underwear is one of those times. She can pick out her own
underwear, if you like. It may also be decorated with princesses and
other characters that will make your daughter enjoy wearing them, so
that she will want to keep them dry.
Books can be helpful, too, in potty training. You can select a book
that explains potty training to children in a way that they will
understand. You can leave books in the bathroom, too, so your child can
look at them while she is having a bowel movement. Don’t encourage
lingering after her “business” is done, however.
Above
all, be patient with your
little girl when you are doing her potty training.
She and you may
experience accidents and setbacks, but it will all work out, and then
you’ll have a happy, potty trained little lady. |
